With Camping Cheque, a cross-channel ferry crossing can cost as little as £29 each way but ferry prices vary considerably so how do you make sure you're finding the lowest prices?
Here are our Cost Saving Tips:
Short crossings
The lowest prices for crossing the Channel are found on the Dover to Dunkerque route operated by Norfolk Line.
Norfolk Line
Travel outward on a Sunday and inward on a Friday for the best possible fares. This can be at any time of year and at any sailing time. For travel on other days of the week try choosing the following sailing times which offer the best fares:
Outward: (Mon-Thurs) 23:59, 02:00, 04:00
Inward: (Mon-Thurs) 20:01, 22:01, 23:58, 02:01, 04:01, 06:01
Note: There are supplements for caravans over 7m long and for motorhomes over 8m. P&O Ferries do not charge supplements for long caravans or long motorhomes so if this affects you, it may be worth asking for quote from P&O as well.
P&O Ferries
Although still more expensive than Norfolk Line, P&O have reduced many of their Dover to Calais fares for 2010. Their prices also cover caravans and
motorhomes of any length so are often very good value for those with long units.
For the best fares travel off peak on the following sailings:
Outward: 14:01 to 06:00
Inward: 00:00 to 14:00
Try to avoid weekend travel in high season (outward: 28-29 May and 23/7-28/8, inward: 5-6 Jun and 31/7-5/9)
SeaFrance
Fares generally undercut P&O for cars and morotorhomes (up to 8 metres priced the same as cars!) although caravans are generally a little more expensive.
Again, pick off-peak travel times which are almost identical to P&O above.
Longer crossings
Brittany Ferries
Again some reasonable price reductions for 2010 on many sailings and a FREE CARAVAN offer on certain Portsmouth to Caen crossings (14:45 outward, 08:30 inward). Brittany Ferries also have a half price caravan and trailer offer for early bookings on other routes.
Sailings with the lowest prices are generally those that arrive late from the UK or leave early from France:
Cherbourg - Poole: 08:00
Portsmouth - Caen: 14:45
Caen - Portsmouth: 08:30
The half price caravan and trailer offer applies to the above sailings all week and all year and in low season also applies to:
St Malo - Portsmouth: 10:30
Plymouth - Roscoff: all sailings
Roscoff - Plymouth: all sailings
P&O Ferries
The popular Hull - Rotterdam/Zeebrugge sailings have become very expensive for caravanners during the week but are still remarkably inexpensive at weekends. The free caravan offer (any length) applies outward and inward on a Saturday and Sunday between 1st May and 31st October.
Condor Ferries
The Condor Clipper service from Portsmouth to Cherbourg is a great option as caravans (up to 7.5 metres) travel FREE OF CHARGE so there's nothing else to pay. The service operates on Sundays only between 23rd May and 12th September.
The Condor Ferries Clipper is a conventional ferry well suited to carrying motorhomes and caravans. The weekly service (Sunday only) travels out from Portsmouth at 09:30 and arrives in Cherbourg at 16:00 local time. The return crossing leaves Cherbourg at 17:00 and arrives at 21:00 local time.
