With Camping Cheque, a cross-channel ferry crossing can cost as little as £29 each way but ferry prices vary considerably so how do you make sure you're finding the lowest prices?
Here are our Cost Saving Tips:
Short crossings
The lowest prices for crossing the Channel are found on the Dover to Dunkerque route operated by DFDS Seaways (formerly Norfolk Line).
DFDS Seaways
For the best deal choose to travel outward on a Sunday and inward on a Friday. This can be at any time of year (i.e. including high season) and at any sailing time. If you are towing a caravan or driving a motorhome these best prices are also available on Saturdays inward and outward (if travelling by car only, Saturday travel is possible but at a small supplement).
Note: DFDS Seaways charge a small supplement for caravans over 7m long and for motorhomes over 8m. P&O Ferries do not charge supplements for long caravans or long motorhomes so if this affects you, it may be worth asking for quote from P&O as well.
P&O Ferries
Although generally a little more expensive than DFDS, P&O may offer better value if towing a long caravan or driving a long motorhome. There are no 'over-length' supplements for long outfits. For the best fares travel off peak on the following sailings:
Outward: 14:01 to 06:00
Inward: 00:00 to 14:00
Try to avoid weekend travel in high season (outward: 1-2 June and 20/7-25/8, inward: 9-10 June and 28/7-1/9).
SeaFrance
Although generally a little more expensive than DFDS, SeaFrance often offer slightly better value than P&O Ferries on the Dover to Calais route – especially if you're driving a motorhome. Motorhomes (up to 8 metres) travel for the same price as a car with SeaFrance at all times.
For the best fares travel off peak on the following sailings:
Outward: 14:01 to 07:00
Inward: 21:01 to 14:59
Try to avoid weekend travel in high season (outward: 1-2 June and 20/7-25/8, inward: 9-10 June and 28/7-2/9).
